April 10-12

‘The Civil War’

Two historic events unfolded in April of 1865 – the end of the Civil War on April 9, bringing to a close four years of bloodshed and abolishing slavery in the United States. And, just four days later, President Abraham Lincoln met his demise at the hands of an assassin. To mark the 150th anniversary, the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall will try something it has never done before: produce a Broadway Musical.

“Peoples Natural Gas Presents The Civil War” will be performed April 10-12 at the ACFL&MH. A “dramatic theatrical concert,” the show incorporates fictionalized diaries, letters and firsthand accounts from ordinary citizens as well as actual historic writings. Directed by Stephen Santa, the production features historic figures such as President Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, as well as fictional characters performed by a cast of 50 outstanding actors/singers. The score incorporates gospel, folk, rock and country motifs.

Performances, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, will bookend the ACFL&MH’s 10th annual Civil War Living History Day. Programmatic offerings include speakers, re-enactors, special exhibits, a film on Appomattox, Sutlers, a book sale and tours of Chartiers Cemetery, where 122 Civil War veterans are buried. The Espy Post and Lincoln Gallery will be open all day. This year’s program takes place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 11. All daytime programming is free, and a detailed schedule is available online. A free shuttle service to the Library & Music Hall will be available for both daytime and evening programming. Refreshments will be available at the Library & Music Hall.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door
