Peters Township grad named ROTW
Tyler Schmidt of Venetia was named the Liberty’s League Rookie of the Week for his recent efforts with the University of Rochester baseball team. During a 3-3 week, the freshman batted .478 (11-23). He drove in nine runs, scored four times, socked two doubles and drilled a triple. Also, he was hit by a pitch and walked once for an on-base percentage of .520 while slugging .652 at the plate. The first year player also added three stolen bases in three attempts.
In a doubleheader sweep of Bard College, Schmidt went 2 for 4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI in game one. In game two, the 6-1, 180-pound shortstop was 3 for 5 with a run and a season-high four RBI.
The Peters Township product earned three varsity letters in high school. He earned all-star status with the WPIAL baseball coaches and on The Almanac Diamond Dozen. Schmidt played travel baseball with the Carolina Ravens U18 team.
He graduated magna cum laude.
