Hollywood celebrates 100th birthday of Orson Welles

May 6
Special screening
The Hollywood Theater, Dormont, will celebrate the 100th birthday of film legend Orson Welles on May 6. The special event will include birthday cake and a special 35mm screening of one of his greatest works, “Citizen Kane.” Bob Hoover, a journalist who’s long had a fascination with the work of Welles, will offer a special introduction and lead short discussion after the film.
In 1938, Welles made his first impression on the public with his famous “War of the Worlds” broadcast, moving into television and film soon after. His most prolific work, however, was “Citizen Kane,” a 1941 drama that proved ground-breaking with its storytelling techniques and captivating cinematography. Wildly regarded as one of the best films ever made, the drama about a wealthy newspaper tycoon and his endless pursuit of power picked up nine Academy Award nominations. In addition to producing, directing and writing the screenplay with Henry J. Mankiewicz, Welles played the lead role of Charles Foster Kane.
Doors open at 7 p.m., when birthday cake will be served. Hoover will speak at 7:30 and the movie will follow. Advance tickets are $8 at www.showclix.com. Tickets at the door are $10.
