Venetia resident to compete in triathlon

Olivia Miller, 19, of Venetia will be among the area athletes competing in the Pittsburgh Triathlon to be held Aug. 7-9 at Point State Park.

There are three separate races. The Sprint Triathlon begins at 6:45 a.m. Aug. 8. This race consists of a 600-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5K run. The Adventure Race starts at 7:15 a.m. Aug. 8. This race consists of a two-mile paddle, a 20K bike and 5K run. The International Triathlon commences at 6:45 a.m. Aug. 9. This race consists of a 1,500-meter swim, 40K bike and 10K run.

In its 18th year, the event is hosted by and benefits Friends of the Riverfront, the nonprofit organization responsible for building and maintaining the Three Rivers Heritage Trail along Allegheny County’s three rivers. Friends of the Riverfront is responsible for building and maintaining the 24-mile Three Rivers Heritage Trail and 21 Three Rivers Water Trail river access points.

Two more triathlons will be featured later this month.

The Habitat for Humanity Kids Triathlon Series continues with the North Park Race on Aug. 15 and the St. Patrick’s Kids Triathlon will be held Aug. 21 in the Town Park area in Canonsburg.

Starting at the North Park pool, sign-in for the Habitat race opens at 7 a.m. with heats beginning at 8. Ages 7-9 swim 50 meters, bike 1.5 miles and run a half-mile distance. Ages 10-12 swim 100 meters, cycle 2.4 miles and race one mile. Ages 13-15 swim 400 meters, bike seven miles and run two miles. A pre-race meeting is held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14.

The St. Patrick’s race begins at 6 p.m. Fee is $20 per person with a reduction for two or more siblings ($25 race day). Make checks payable to St. Patrick’s Athletic Association and mail entry to: Leah Drain, triathlon director, 331 Hawthorne St., Canonsburg, PA 15317. Registration deadline is Aug. 15.

Ages 5-7 swim one pool length, ¼-mile bike and run. Ages 8-10 swim two pool lengths, ½-mile bike and run. Ages 11-13 swim three lengths, ¾-mile bike and run. Ages 14-17 swim four lengths, 1-mile bike and run. Ages 18-21 swim six lengths, 1.5-mile bike and 2-mile run. New this year is a parent group relay. Distances are: six pool lengths and 2-mile bike and run/walk.

Dinner follows the races. Tickets, $5 per person, are available for those not competing in the triathlon.

Proceeds benefit the St. Patrick’s Athletic Association, which offers cross country, basketball, bowling, soccer and cheerleading at the grade school. For more details, email aenergys@verizon.net or call 412-327-3993.
