Bethel Park deer problem being addressed
The recent edition of the Almanac published a letter to the editor relative to the Mt. Lebanon deer control plan. The letter stated, “The culling strategy would be a good idea for Bethel Park as well.”
Presented are the facts relative to the Bethel Park deer control program. Bethel Park has had an agreement with Whitetail Management Associates since 1996. The maximum number of deer harvested in a year is 128 (1997). The minimum number of deer harvested in a year is 31 (2007).
The total number of deer harvested for the 19-year period is 1,147. The average number of deer harvested per year is 60.
The number of deer harvested per year is limited by the locations available for the hunters. The writer of the concluded his letter thusly “I would be happy to host such hunters on my property.” I have requested that the Bethel Park police contact the letter writer to evaluate the acceptability of his property for deer control activity.
