Global Links hosts Beers for Babes
Aug. 30
Beers for Babes
Craft beer and baby bottles come together for international medical relief agency Global Links’ Beers for Babes: Not your typical baby shower.
The casual event, held 4-6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 in the courtyard at The Global Switchboard, Lawrenceville, will generate support for and awareness of Global Links’ Welcome Baby Project, a program that helps clinics in resource-poor communities provide prenatal and maternal care.
Guests will enjoy craft beer and tacos by Edgar’s Tacos; learn about Global Links’ mission to provide prenatal and infant/maternal care; pack baby bags with care items for soon-to-be moms; and participate in a simulation game that illustrates what it takes to access healthcare when living in a remote rural community in a resource poor community.
Attendees who bring a baby care item from the Global Links’ needs list will be entered to win prizes. Items needed include new baby clothing, size newborn-9 months; diapers, size newborn or one; baby hygiene items such as wash/shampoo, lotion, powder or baby wipes; and new baby/receiving blankets.
According to the UN Millennium Development Goals Report, only half of pregnant women in developing communities receive prenatal care. Because of the challenge and cost of traveling to a hospital or clinic, infant and maternal mortality rates remain high in rural areas of many of the Latin American countries where Global Links serves.
