As soon as his salary was approved for 2015-16, Mt. Lebanon School District Superintendent Timothy Steinhauer earmarked some of the money.

“Being the father of two sons who now have graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School, I would like to give $5,000 of that raise to the Century of Excellence capital campaign, just in recognition of the great education my children have had,” he said at the Aug. 17 school board meeting. “I want to make sure we maintain and ensure that program for years to come.”

The board voted unanimously to give him a satisfactory performance review and set his compensation at $186,625, retroactive to July 1. The capital campaign was established in 2012 to raise private money to offset the rising cost of public education.

Steinhauer is in the second year of a five-year contract, which runs through 2019. Under terms of the agreement, his salary was $175,000 for 2014-15, and for the current fiscal year, his pay increase is 6.6 percent.

Lawrence Lebowitz, school board president, complimented Steinhauer’s impact on the school district.

“Nearly every month, we talk about the incredible success of our students and all of the wonderful things that we have going on in the district,” he said. “While everyone most certainly contributes to these efforts, not the least of which is our students, there is no question that Dr. Steinhauer’s leadership over these past several years has a direct impact on each and every one of these successes.”

Lebowitz learned Monday that he is one of five recipients of the Mt. Lebanon Great Alumni Award for 2015.

A 1980 graduate, he is an attorney with Pittsburgh firm Cohen & Grigsby. He volunteers on behalf of several community efforts and has served on the school board since 2010.

Steinhauer announced the award recipients, who will be honored at a Sept. 25 luncheon and again at that night’s Blue Devils football game. The others being honored are:

• The Rev John Chakos, class of 1959, who served as priest of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Mt. Lebanon for 31 years.

• Jack Daly, class of 1984, a Case Western Reserve University graduate who organized the nonprofit Case Engineer Support Group, which builds equipment for occupational and physical therapists who work with disabled adults and children.

• Greg Gnipp, class of 1986, whose work with the U.S. Public Health Service includes working in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and helping to contain the Ebola virus in Liberia.

• Josephine Posti, class of 1986, who served two terms on the school board and also volunteers for numerous community organizations.

Another Mt. Lebanon alumnus, 1952 graduate Richard Madden, had the honor of the board voting Aug. 17 to name the high school library after him.

Madden established a scholarship in 2003 for Mt. Lebanon graduates pursuing higher education, and so far more than $700,000 has been awarded, according to Lebowitz.

The board president also announced that a dedication of the renovated high school is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. A reception and open house will follow.
