The South Fayette School Board is paving and repaving the way for its students by discussing resurfacing and replacing some of the school’s parking lot and driveway as part of its proposed renovations at the Aug. 18 board meeting.

The plan to renovate and expand the South Fayette campus may now include resurfacing and repaving portions of the pavement that have been evaluated by Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC). A visual assessment and shallow borings were used to determine the condition of the pavement and spots with poor grades will be addressed under the proposal. The new surfaces could add between 10 and 20 years of life to the pavement.

The board was asked to make a decision at the meeting, but will wait to hear information regarding cost before considering a vote.

“There’s nothing here to approve,” School Board president Alan Vezzi said.

CEC also conducted a geotechnical study to determine the ground quality of areas that will be part of the new additions. CEC made recommendations on the type of foundation to be used in each area based on their findings.

A land survey and traffic study will need to be completed as part of the renovation and expansion proposal as well.

School started Aug. 24, and South Fayette is expecting enrollment of roughly 3,000 students on the first day including new students from India, Venezuela and the Bahamas that use English as their second language.

“We’re excited to have our students back,” said Superintendant Billie Rondinelli.

The district has planned “Meet the Teacher” nights, a Senior/Senior night and the Festival of Bands for August and September.
