Jubilee announces renovation
Jubilee Christian School, an inter-denominational school for grades K-8 with campuses in Mt. Lebanon and Dormont, announces Phase II of renovations at its Dormont Upper Campus. In addition, several new and enhanced educational programs have been added.
Phase II renovations are underway at the Upper Campus, located inside the educational wing of North Way Christian Community in Dormont, to add a classroom for fifth-grade students and expand the middle school science lab. This will enable the Upper Campus to house students in fifth through eighth grades. Last year’s Phase I renovations included two new classrooms, as well as technology and safety/security infrastructure, to facilitate the school’s expansion to eighth grade.
Earlier this year Jubilee received a robotics grant to enhance its robotics course for middle school students. The course is built on LEGO Mindstorms, a hands-on curriculum that uses EV3 Robotics to teach students real-world science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts. A Maker Bot 3D printer will be incorporated into the course.
Under the direction of middle school science and math teacher Brandi Charles, students work in teams to build and program the robots. “Our students are learning some extremely valuable lessons that go beyond simply creating and programming robots,” Charles said. “They’re learning how to be tenacious in solving complex problems, how to work as a team, and how math and science relate to the real world. These lessons are key to Jubilee’s mission of creating life-long learners.”
Elementary students in grades 1-4 will experience a new technology class, in addition to current programs in art, music, physical education and library.
In the area of physical education, Jubilee received an instructional and equipment grant from a national organization to begin a tennis program. Initially, students in grades K-8 will participate via weekly gym classes, with the possibility of expanding to an extracurricular sports program.
