With school back in session, Mt. Lebanon police are keeping alert
With the 2015-16 academic year starting Monday, Mt. Lebanon police are conducting their annual school zone safety initiative.
The department will have extra officers working at designated school zones before and after school for the first few weeks, focusing on poor and unsafe driving behavior.
“Motorists who speed and drive distracted in a school zone not only place risks on other motorists, but they place risk on our children heading to and from school,” said police Chief Aaron Lauth. “Our officers are going to work hard and be on the lookout for those unsafe drivers.”
Digital speed signs will also be deployed during the awareness effort to warn motorists if they are driving above the speed limit.
In addition to reduced speed limits in school zones, officers will be focusing on aggressive driving, texting while driving, seat belt usage and child passenger safety laws
Officers will be deployed during arrival and dismissal times while there is increased school traffic. Random, unannounced school zone enforcement efforts will continue regularly throughout the school year.
Parents are encouraged to become familiar with the traffic plans for dropoff and pickup at each school, and safe walking routes for children, by visiting Mt. Lebanon School District’s website: www.mtlsd.org.
