The Enoch Wright House is marking its bicentennial.

Two hundred years ago, a stately house was under construction in the midst of what then was the wilderness of Peters Township.

The annual Soup and Stroll at the Enoch Wright House on Venetia Road was reminiscent of the holiday seasons celebrated there by members of the Wright family and, more recently, the Peters Creek Historical Society, which maintains the venerable Georgian-style structure.

On an unseasonably clear and mild Dec. 6, visitors stopped by to sample soup made by historical society members while learning more about what the house has to offer. Greeting guests were people dressed in period clothing, including a portrayal of Father Christmas, the holiday predecessor to Santa Claus.

The Wright House, which was completed in 1816, contains several history-related displays, including the bedroom of Charity Wright, featuring authentic 19th-century furniture, and a mining room with plenty of rare artifacts from what once was the local area’s primary industry.

Also on the property is a log house that was built in West Finley Township in what is believed to be the 1790s. Ten years ago, it was transported to the other side of Washington County and reassembled with the utmost attention to detail.
