Mt. Lebanon welcomes new junior commissioner

Mt. Lebanon High School senior Christian Vietmeier will serve as Mt. Lebanon’s junior commissioner for the second semester of 2015-16.
Junior commissioners attend all Mt. Lebanon Commission meetings and report on events and issues in the school district that they feel may be of interest to elected officials. Also, junior commissioners have the opportunity to sit in on volunteer board meetings and to spend time with municipal staff members.
The commission selected Vietmeier, a senior, on the basis of his high grade point average, service as a homeroom representative and commitment to a variety of activities.
He is a member of the varsity tennis and golf teams, and he plays piano and cello. In addition, he is involved with the youth program at Beverly Heights Church and went on a mission trip in the summer to Malawi, where he worked with children in need. He also volunteers at an East Liberty shelter for men who are homeless.
Vietmeier hopes his work as a junior commissioner can help implement positive change.
“Ever since I was a young boy, I have been thoroughly intrigued by government and how it is a crucial part to the livelihood of all Americans,” he said in his application. “Due to me being under age, my vote, my voice, has been limited. Serving as a junior commissioner would establish a direct link between my voice as a youth in the community and the more experienced citizens.”
He will attend his first meeting Jan. 12.
