Humane Society letter missed points
The Feb. 4 letter from Laura Simon of the Humane Society missed a few points. She suggests that trapping deer to kill them is inefficient and inhumane. Her position is that the deer would not willingly go into a cage, and once in the cage they will panic and break their legs. She instead suggests sterilization as a solution. Unfortunately, she fails to mention how they sterilize the deer. Do they administer a tranquilizer with a high powered rifle or put them in a cage to sterilize them? Perhaps the Humane Society can take in the stray deer as they do stray cats and dogs and care for them and feed them until they find them a new home. Unfortunately if this is not done, then more and more Mt. Lebanon home owners will complain and demand that the commission solve the deer problem. This is a phenomenon known as “culling compensation.”
