Bethel Park drops Hempfield, 51-36
Bethel Park defeated Hempfield, 51-36, in a first-round WPIAL Quad-A girls’ basketball playoff game at Charleroi High School gym.
With the win, the Lady Hawks improved to 19-4 overall. They ride a 16-game winning streak into their quarterfinal playoff contest Feb. 20 against Pine-Richland at a site and time to be determined. The Rams also are 19-4 overall after beating McKeesport, 56-43, in their playoff opener at Fox Chapel.
In the final four minutes of play, Bethel Park used an 11-point run to finish off the Spartans, who ended the season at 14-9 overall. Clinging to a 31-29 advantage after three quarters, the Lady Hawks outscored Hempfield, 20-7, in the final frame.
After falling behind, 12-9, in the first frame, Mia Mattes lifted Bethel Park into the lead. Her 3-point field goal at the buzzer provided the Lady Hawks a 22-19 advantage by halftime.
Mattes fired in 13 points. Shannon Conely also accumulated that many markers while Justina Mascaro led the Lady Hawks with 18 tallies.
