Girls’ Basketball Round-up
Bethel Park (9-4) stretched its winning streak to six games with victories against Baldwin, 64-45, and Canon-McMillan, 48-32.
With the wins, the Lady Hawks moved into a three-way tie for second place in Section 4-AAA with the Highlanders and Upper St. Clair. All three were 5-2 and a game behind Mt. Lebanon, which slipped to 6-1 in the division after falling to USC, 52-45, on Jan. 12.
In the win against the Highlanders, Justina Mascaro exploded for 21 points. Kaitlyn Chess and Shannon Conely followed with 12 tallies, while Mia Mattes pitched in 11 markers.
Against the Lady Macs, Conely pumped in 22 and Chess followed with 13 tallies. Danielle Park was tops for Canon-Mac with 18 points.
USC upsets Lebo
Upper St. Clair upended Mt. Lebanon, 52-45. The Lady Panthers overcame deficits of 14-6 after one quarter and 29-25 at halftime to overtake the Blue Devils with an impressive third quarter. USC outscored Lebo, 17-8, in the frame and 10-8 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Rachel Mazzie and Diandra Conwell led the uprising with 18 and 12 tallies. Kenzie Bushee and Alyssa Hyland paced Lebo with 14 and 12 markers.
Before their loss to USC, the Lebo ladies used a 17-5 advantage in the second stanza to pull away from Canon-McMillan and score a 64-44 victory. Kate Sramac (24), Hyland (13) and Bushee (10) all finished in double digits for the Blue Devils. Danielle Parker fired in 18 points for the Lady Macs.
Bushee (20), Maura Wallace (14) and Fabi Shipley (10) joined forces to dispatch West Allegheny, 60-49, in non-league action.
Despite a 22-point production from Mazzie, USC dropped a 61-48 decision to Baldwin before upending Lebo. Conwell and Alley Steve pitched in 11 and 10 tallies for the Panthers.
On the heels of the loss to the Highlanders, the Lady Panthers also defeated Peters Township, 60-47. Steve and Mazzie led USC with 23 and 10 points. Madison Kerr (14), Cameron Morgan (13) and Emily Konwick (10) paced the Indians.
Behind the 20-point performance from Kerr, Peters Township toppled West Allegheny, 59-47. Morgan and Alyssa Konopka pumped in 17 and 10 points for the Lady Indians.
Back in section action on Jan. 12, Peters prevailed in overtime, 69-64, against Canon-Mac, and improved to 3-4 in the division and 8-5 overall. The Lady Indians made 15 of 24 free throws, including 8 of 10 in the extra frame to seal the victory.
Konwick and Konopka tossed in 27 and 16 points respectively to lead Peters. Danielle Parker exploded for 30 markers for the Lady Macs, who slipped to 3-4 in the section and 8-5 overall. Cheyenne Trest also supplied 16 tallies.
Section 5-AAA
Chartiers Valley defeated McGuffey, 61-48. Alexa Golden exploded for 26 while Melissa Rickens and Elizabeth Schneider provided 13 and 11 points for the Lady Colts, who lead Section 5-AAA with a 6-0 record. They improved to 9-3 overall after edging Oakland Catholic, 55-54, in non-league action Jan. 12. Golden and Rickens both scored 16 points in the triumph.
South Fayette whipped Montour, 70-17. Carlee Kilgus (16), Emily Anderson (15) and Sam Kosmacki (14) finished in double figures. The Lions, however, dropped a 71-55 decision to McGuffey in Section 5-AAA action. Autumn Mozick pumped in 21 while Kilgus fired in 10 points.
More recently, the Lions came from behind to beat Peters Township in a non-section contest, 56-53. Though Peters led 25-17 at halftime, the Lions pulled to within 41-39 after three quarters and then outscored the Indians 22-16 in the fourth quarter.
Kilgus led South Fayette with 20 points while Anderson tossed in 16. Madison Kerr paced PT with 19. Emily Konwick contributed 16.
Behind the 14-and 10-point performances from Alexa Valforte and Kristy Lippert, Keystone Oaks toppled Brentwood, 55-49.
Section 3-AA
Jalyn Myers scored a career-high 26 points and had 10 rebounds as Chartiers-Houston dispatched Burgettstown, 54-33. Jules Vulcano contributed 17 markers. Myers (14) and Alexa Williamson (19) led the Lady Bucs to a 56-13 win as well in Section 3-AA.
