Alexa Malstrom has been a Girl Scout for 11 straight years, starting in Michigan. After moving to Pennsylvania, Alexa progressed through four Peters Township troops to her Gold Award, the highest honor as a Girl Scout. She officially received her Gold Award on Feb. 17, and attended a Western Pennsylvania Girl Scout Court of Awards ceremony in Indiana, Pa., on May 31.

Alexa followed her passion with her Gold Award project. With “Golden Geckos,” she educated well over 300 people in Washington Country at many events that geckos can be household pets to be held and not just observed through the glass of a fish tank. Alexa bred many baby geckos. The mommas laid clutches of two eggs at a time. After incubation of the eggs, the eggs hatched into babies of her crafted morphs. Alexa built two gecko racks and is considering selling her geckos at reptile shows.

Alexa’s Silver Award project involved painting a 35′ by 17′ map of the United States with road paint at Hillcrest Christian Academy. Her Bronze Award project involved ripping out and recreating the front two landscaping beds at the Venetia Senior Citizens Center.

Over her Girl Scout years, Alexa sold more than 2,500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. One year, she sold 475 boxes of cookies. Mrs. Vanistendael, troop leader of 51944 said that Alexa is a young woman of character who will succeed in any endeavor that she pursues.
