Screening of ‘Namaste Nepal’ an earthquake relief fundraiser
July 23
‘Namaste Nepal’
As the three-month anniversary of Nepal’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake approaches, Pittsburgh’s youth-based Youth for Environmental Sustainability will host a screening of “Namaste Nepal” to help raise money for ongoing relief efforts in the country.
The film, which documents 15 American students as they embark on the journey of a lifetime to Nepal, will be shown at 7 p.m. July 23 at the Hollywood Theater, Dormont.
“Namaste Nepal” is an adventure which proves that friendship crosses borders and speaks its own language. The story traces the students from their privileged Silicon Valley homes to the Nepali district of Manang, 13,000 ft. high in the Himalayan Mountains. As they foster relationships with a group of Manangi high-schoolers, the Americans immerse themselves in Nepali culture and open themselves to ways of living which are vastly different from their own upbringing. Both groups come away forever changed by their experiences. This film was selected for the screening as it closely mirrors the experiences of 10 Pittsburgh high school students during a three-week visit to Nepal in July and August of last year to study environmental health.
Photos from the YES trip to Nepal will be displayed on the main screen beforehand. The evening will conclude with a brief Q&A session with the YES students about their experiences in Nepal.
Tickets are $15 for adults ($10 for students online through July 21). All funds raised will be sent directly to organizations in Nepal working on the ground to help with earthquake relief. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ylp2014USA or call Bradford Mumpower at 412-400-8241.
