McCain editorial ‘well done’
As I read the editorial “John McCain is a hero in the July 22-28 Almanac, two words from my Navy days used for an exemplary performance apply: “Well done!”
One of Senator McCain’s sons graduated from the U.S. Naval academy, making a member of the fourth generation of the McCain family to do so.
The McCain family has served this country long and well and with magnificent courage. Indeed, the day the future senator was shot down, his father, Admiral John S. McCain Jr. was named commander of the Pacific fleet.
A dinner honoring the Admiral and his wife that evening and before they went, Mrs. McCain wondered what they would tell the guests. The Admiral said, “We will tell them tomorrow.” Duty. Honor. Country.
When the dastardly Viet Cong found out McCain’s father was an admiral, they offered to let him go if he would provide military information. He refused.
Some believe Donald Trump pops off because he is a multi-billionaire. Perhaps. The odds are probably high he’d be a gibbering windbag even if he lived on Skid Row. And what is that look on Trump
s face suggesting he has just smelled something malodorous? Maybe it’s his breath blowing back at him. He has even suggested that former Texas governor Rick Perry (an Air Force pilot during the Vietnam Wonflict) is now wearing glasses to “make him look smarter.”
John Stuart Mill’s words apply to the Donald Trumps of the world: “War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The ugliest is that man who thinks nothing is worth fighting and dying for and lets men better and braver than himself protect him.”
