Good luck to Matt Smith
It is a bittersweet moment for the constituents of State Senator Matt Smith upon learning of the news that he will resign his position in order to lead the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce.
I have known the Senator for most of the time that he has been an elected official. He is a reasonable, approachable, modest, down to earth individual. Before I was a constituent of his, he impressed me greatly by taking an interest in my views and twice meeting with me to discuss matters facing the Commonwealth. He has been more responsive to me than some who represent me and others who have represented me in the past, and unlike others who enjoy prominent positions in public service, he is highly visible and active in the community, one who utilizes a variety of means to communicate with constituents and keep them informed. Among the means of connecting with residents has been his frequent telephone town hall meetings, enabling constituents to participate and ask questions from the comfort of their homes. Matt Smith has attempted to represent all of the people in his district and has adopted positions which are reasonable and non-partisan.
Although he is a Democrat with whom I take issue on certain matters, prominently including the privatization of alcohol sales, we enjoyed a meeting of the minds due to his willingness to be open to other views and to listen.
I am sure that the end of frequent travel to Harrisburg is appealing to a man with a young family in the Pittsburgh area and that the Senator is accepting what is a better opportunity for him. Those who have come to know this fine man wish him Godspeed, abundant happiness and joy in the years ahead. He shall be fondly remembered.
