Lecture series

As part of the 2nd Saturday Lecture Series at the Captain Thomas Espy GAR Post 153, Prof. Guibert and the 1913 Blue & Gray Reunion Band with Jim Smith the “Yankee Drummer” will perform 1-2 p.m. June 13 at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall, located on Beechwood Avenue in Carnegie.

In June of 1913, more than 50,000 aging veterans of the Civil War converged on Gettysburg for the 50th anniversary of the battle. While most veterans took advantage of free rail transportation, 70-year-old Peter Guibert and his 62-year-old friend, John Conroy, walked 200 miles over the Laurel and Allegheny mountains in 19 days and were the first to arrive at the reunion. In 2013, 70-year-old Peter Smith and 62-year-old Ray Zimmerman followed in Guibert’s footsteps, by beating a drum from Pittsburgh to Gettysburg. Join us as Jim Smith retells their story and offers patriotic drumbeats and soldier’s reminisces.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free.

The Espy Post will be open before and after the performance.
