Mt. Lebanon citizens are engaged

2 min read

The citizens of Mt. Lebanon are arguably the most engaged group of people in the South Hills. One need look no further than the front of the municipal building before a commissioners meeting, or inside the doors of a commissioners or school board meeting to see the evidence.

Granted, there have been some hot-button issues in Mt. Lebanon – including the controversial deer cull to the improvements to Wildcat Field.

The issue that residents were vocal about most recently was merely their desire for pay-as-you-throw garbage collection.

What we admire about the people in Mt. Lebanon is that they tell their commissioners what they want. They don’t sit back and complain about what’s happening around them – they do something about it.

Or, at least, they try.

With the deer cull – which, by the way, isn’t a topic that’s going away any time soon – the community was incredibly divided, and commissioners sided with those in favor of thinning the deer population. But these residents, these passionate residents, kept pushing what they believed in. They did it peacefully (for the most part), but they did it together, and they will likely be seen in public, signs and petitions in hand, again.

It was Gandhi who said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” and Mt. Lebanon exemplifies that sentiment.

We are sure that many of those people protesting are frustrated, thinking that no matter what they say or do, change won’t come.

But it’s certainly not going to come if no one does anything, and if no one voices their opinions or concerns.

We applaud the residents of Mt. Lebanon for standing up for what they believe in, and urge members of other communities to do the same, no matter what the issue. Attend municipal and school board meetings to know and understand what’s going on in your community. Call your mayor, your supervisor or your school board director with questions and concerns.

Don’t sit around and wait for someone else to do it for you.
