Peters Township grad merits scholarship

Kirsch nets award
Nicholas Kirsch of McMurray has been awarded The George Benson Scholarship. Given annually by the membership of South Hills Country Club, the Scholarship is valued at $6,000, paid over four years.
Since its inception in 2012, $32,000 has been awarded to applicants who are evaluated on the basis of character, financial need, academic performance and extracurricular activities.
A graduate of Brentwood High School and Duke University, Benson was a distinguished captain in the Air Force, a successful South Hills businessman, and an inspiration to those whose lives he touched. But, many will remember him most for his life-long passion for the game of golf. His many amateur titles included the West Penn Amateur and more than 20 club championships in the U.S. and England.
The George Benson Scholarship is open to high school seniors who have competed for at least two seasons on selected high school golf teams, or have caddied for at least two seasons at any West Penn Golf Association member club.
A four-year caddie at South Hills Country Club, Kirsch was a high school football and track standout at Peters Township High School. He maintained a 3.8 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society. He will attend Robert Morris University in the fall and major in chemical engineering.
