Scott Township Commissioners voted unanimously to advertise for bids for demolition of the current pool in Scott Park and for construction of a new pool. The action came at the board’s June 23 regular meeting.

Bid opening is scheduled for July 23, and the board is expected to award the bid at the July 28 regular meeting. Scott Pool will close for the season on Aug. 16 so work can begin on the new pool.

During the same meeting, Scott resident Tim Clark voiced concerns about a synthetic ice rink planned for Scott Park.

A self-described hockey fanatic who lives on Lindsay Road near the park, Clark was initially “thrilled” about having a synthetic ice rink in the municipality until he started researching them.

Clark tried the synthetic surface at the fall festival, and after speaking with people who have used synthetic ice rinks, the feedback Clark has heard is that they are designed more for a hard workout and not for a fun, recreational experience.

Commissioner Eileen Meyers said the surface planned for the proposed rink is a different quality than what was available at the fall festival.

Clark also commented that the surface causes more wear on skates, requiring them to be sharpened more often.

Clark said the rink was a big initial investment, with additional costs to maintain the surface. He questioned the board whether enough people would use the rink to justify the cost.

The cost of the proposed synthetic rink is estimated at around $400,000.

In other business, the board approved the purchase or lease of a new vehicle for the township’s code enforcement officer. The board voted unanimously to approve the purchase of a new vehicle for no more than $22,000; or the lease of a vehicle for no more than $400 per month.
