In the run-up to Easter, man – or woman, or child – does not live on chocolate alone.

But any serious shopper burning calories by running hither and yon may need some fortification.

Sarris Candies of Canonsburg, where the Easter Bunny’s helpers often head this time of year, has its ice cream parlor and a massive number of candy bars, novelty chocolate shapes including hot dogs and tacos, plus jelly beans and other treats. However tempting, not everyone would choose a banana split as a meal when nipping into busy candy central during the lunch hour or right after work.

So Sarris, for the first time, is augmenting its alimentary choices with a succession of some big-name Pittsburgh food trucks starting March 26.

“This is our busiest time when we have the most foot traffic, and many of our shoppers are also looking for a bite to eat,” said Athena Sarris of the candy family.

The food truck schedule, beginning this week, is as follows:

• March 26 – Franktuary, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• March 27 – Taco Truck, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• March 28 – BRGR Truck, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• March 29 – Taco Truck, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• April 1 – South Side BBQ Truck, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• April 2 – BRGR Truck, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• April 3 – Taco Truck, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• April 4 – BRGR Truck, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sarris chose the taco truck Fridays because it offers fish tacos for those who prefer meatless meals on those days.

The food trucks will park in front of the business at 511 Adams Ave. near the candy store entrance. Picnic tables stand outside the ice cream parlor year-round, so if the weather cooperates, diners are welcome to use them.

The Sarrises checked with Canonsburg Borough’s rules and Athena Sarris said the store needed no special permit to bring in the food vendors. Security guards will be on hand to ensure safety of customers as they park and cross the street.

In addition to the mobile units, there’s a stationary site surrounded on three sides by the Sarris Complex. Sam’s Pizza at 525 Adams Ave., owned and operated by the Rhome and Passante families, as in Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome, is open from 4 to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays, according to its website.

“We get Sam’s pizza every Friday,” said Athena Sarris. “We’re good friends. It’s not going to be an issue.”
