Special celebration

On May 9, the Friends of the Hollywood Theater will team up with First Commonwealth Dormont to celebrate four years since it reopened the theater doors, and to mark 88 years since it first opened as a silent cinema.

To help mark the occasion, Pittsburgh native and actor Tom Atkins will join the festivities as special guest. Atkins recently received acclaim for his stage performance as Steelers’ founder Arthur J. Rooney Sr. in “The Chief,” and is perhaps best known for his film work in “Lethal Weapon,” “Halloween III,” George Romero’s “Creepshow,” and John Carpenter’s “The Fog” and “Escape From New York.”

Atkins will present a brand new digital transfer of “Escape From New York.”

The evening will also include live music by the vintage rock and surf instrumental trio The Retro Agents, hors d’oeuvres, birthday cake, beer and wine, and annual auction featuring Penguins box seats, Pirates tickets, gifts from area restaurants, limited edition posters, a free private night at the Hollywood and more. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Hollywood Theater.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with a conversation with Tom Atkins at 7:30 followed by the film shortly after 8.

Tickets are $15 in advance at www.showclix.com/event/Birthday2015, or $20 at the door ($12 advance or $15 at the door for current members) and includes two drink tickets.
