PT Jazz Band Reunion Concert to benefit Dave Pew Memorial Scholarship

May 16
Jazz reunion concert
The seventh annual Peters Township Jazz Band Reunion Concert will be held at 7 p.m. May 16 in the Peters Township High School Auditorium.
This year’s concert will feature the Peters Township Alumni Jazz Ensemble with guest soloist Harold Betters, a legendary trombonist. The group will be under the direction of Milton Barney, Peters Township School District’s director of bands.
Proceeds from the concert benefit the Dave Pew Memorial Scholarship at the Washington County Community Foundation. Pew was an accomplished musician who played all over the country with big bands. He enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years and was able to continue his music by being chosen to play lead trumpet in the official Air Force Band in San Francisco. At the end of his tour of duty, Pew enrolled in the Music Education Department at Duquesne University. After graduating, he accepted his first teaching position with the Peters Township School District in 1958 and made a lasting impression on the lives of many young people until he retired from the education field in 1986.
The Dave Pew Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was initiated by a group of his former students after his passing in 2001, provides educational scholarships to graduating seniors of Peters Township High School pursing a career in music. To date, a total of $2,500 in scholarships has been awarded from the fund.
