At the board’s Oct. 5 regular meeting, Upper St. Clair Commissioner Rex Waller presented USC Volunteer Fire Department Chief Steve Moore with a proclamation declaring Oct. 4-10 as National Fire Prevention Week in the township.

Stating that it was “quite an honor,” Waller also recognized several volunteers for their years of service with the fire department. Douglas Dennig, a volunteer firefighter for 40 years, received a certificate from the board. Also recognized, but not present, were: Don Gerlach, 35 years; John Doebler, 20 years; and Mike Gannon, 10 years.

The board noted that 2015 was the 10th anniversary of the current station on Washington Road, with board president Robert Orchowski calling the station “one of the best investments we ever made.”

Commissioner Russell DelRe said he couldn’t emphasize enough the savings to taxpayers by having a volunteer fire service. He encouraged residents to donate to the organization during the department’s annual fund drives, adding that donations can be made online.
