Mt. Lebanon Fire Department will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, to wrap up Fire Prevention Week.

The event will be held at the Mt. Lebanon Public Safety Center, 555 Washington Road.

Guests are invited to try on firefighter gear, use Jaws of Life equipment, learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation and tour the fire station. Featured will be apparatus and equipment displays, Sparky the Fire Dog, fire extinguisher training, Fire Safety House, technical rescue and water rescue displays, forcible entry and firefighter survival demonstrations, and child identification.

Kids can operate a hose line to “extinguish” a house fire prop.

The fire department also will be promoting the Fire Prevention Week theme of “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!”

One-third of homes in Mt. Lebanon do not have a working smoke alarm, and only 9 percent of Mt. Lebanon homes have a working smoke alarm on all levels and in each bedroom, according to the fire department. It has launched a smoke alarm campaign to install more than 1,650 free smoke detectors.

Residents can schedule their free smoke detector installation during the open house or by calling 412-343-3402. Smoke alarm equipment for the hearing impaired, including bed shakers and strobe lights, also are available.
