World War II drama tells the story of “another Anne Frank”

Oct. 22-Nov. 7
‘Letters to Sala’
While many know the story of Anne Frank, few are familiar with the equally remarkable story of another World War II labor camp survivor named Sala Garncarz.
Little Lake Theatre Company will retell this young woman’s incredible journey in a Family Matinee production of Arlene Hutton’s “Letters to Sala,” Oct. 22-Nov. 7.
When Sala’s older sister was ordered to report to a Nazi forced labor camp during World War II, Sala volunteered go in her place. Neither she nor her family suspected that six weeks of required labor would stretch to almost five years of slavery. Throughout her time of imprisonment in seven Nazi labor camps, Sala incredibly risked her life to hide more than 350 letters that she received from family and friends–concealing them from guards, handing them off to friends, throwing them under buildings, even burying them.
“This is both a Holocaust story and a testament to the beautiful brilliance of the human spirit,” said director Jena Oberg. “We need to study the Holocaust so that we never forget the atrocities that occurred, but we also tell these stories because of the amazing, courageous acts that took place in dark times. We have the power to be the good in our world.”
