Peters Township qualifies six golfers

Peters Township advanced the maximum number of golfers out of the Section 7-AAA Tournament held at Lindenwood Golf Course. They were to compete in the WPIAL semifinals scheduled for Sept. 29 at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo. The top finishers in the semifinals advance to the WPIAL championships set for Oct. 8 at Southpointe Golf Club in Cecil Township.
“I’m very proud of all of my kids,” said PT head coach David Kuhn. “The course played difficult with fast greens and some challenging pin locations, but they kept their composure and responded well to adversity.”
During the sectional, Connor Schmidt fired a 3-under par on the 6,290-yard blue course. He shot 38 on the front nine and 31 on the back.
Jake Sollon carded a 35-39-74, while Alec Stopperich followed with a 42-34-76. Tanner Johnson, Hunter Bruce and J.W. Cunningham all finished with 79s, good enough to qualify for the semifinals.
Several golfers from Upper St. Clair, Canon-McMillan and Chartiers Valley have the same chance as the Indians. They also qualified for the semifinals. From USC are Jasckson Sandusky (76), Jack O’Leary (76), Lou Olsakvosky (78), Chris Josen (79) and Brad Vespa (81). Christian Stewart represents the Big Macs at 81 and Zack Pilossoph bears the CV banner with a 77.
Six girls qualify
Six area girls qualified for the WPIAL finals in golf.
Mia Kness of Peters Township tied Upper St. Clair’s Bella Petrone for medalist honors. Both carded 72s in the Section 2 tournament played at Lindenwood Golf Course.
Synclaire Kuhn and Brooke Hilden joined Kness in the championships. The PT duffers scored 78 and 82, respectively.
USC’s Elizabeth Engel also qualified with an 83. Canon-McMillan’s Taylor Waller scored an 80 and also made the cut.
PT bests USC
Peters Township defeated Upper St. Clair, 174-192, in girls’ golf and clinched the section title.
Mia Kness led the Lady Indians, who were WPIAL runners-up last year. She shot a 40, while Synclaire Kun followed with a 42. Brooke Hilden and Alyssa Parham fired 47 and 45 respectively to complete PT’s scoring.
Ella Patrone paced the Lady Panthers with a 44 score. Elizabeth Engel followed with a 46. Meredith Engel added a 48 and Natlie Urban finished with a 54.
Schmidt 2-under
Connor Schmidt fired a 2-under-par 36 and paced Peters Township to a 10-stroke victory against Chartiers Valley, 183-193, in boys’ scholastic golf.
Jake Sollon, J.W. Cunningham and Hunter Bruce all finished with 37s on the front 9 at The Club at Nevillewood. Alec Stopperich carded a 38 to complete the Indians’ scoring.
Drew Harris shot even par for the Colts, who are 4-3 in Section 7 play. Zack Pilosoph and Nick McCullough finished with 37 and 39, respectively. Cole and Connor Wasson added 40 and 41 to the CV total.
In exhibition play, Brian Livolsi and Will Lusk carded 36 and 37, respectively, for the Indians. Chris Joseph and Andy Musial played exhibition rounds for the Colts.
The Indians also defeated Bethel Park, 186-222, at Valley Brook Country Club.
Tanner Johnson led PT with a 1-under-par 35. Schmidt and Cunningham carded 36s, while Sollon finished with a 38. Bruce completed the scoring with a 41.
For the Hawks, John Selep and Mason Miller had the low scores of 41. Zach Sedor, Nick Balogh and Caleb Pierson completed the scoring for BP, which slipped to 4-4 overall.
In follow-up action, the Indians defeated Trinity, 186-218, and improved their overall record to 13-0. Leaders for the Indians included: Schmidt, Johnson and Cunningham, all with par 36s; Sollon with a 38; and Stopperich with a 40.
Livolsi turned in an exhibition score of 36 while Lusk finished with a 39.
The Indians also beat Canon-McMillan, 182-223. Stopperich, Sollon, Cunningham and Schmidt all fired even par at Rolling Hills, while Johnson was two over with 38.
Christian Stewart, Tony D’Amico, Vinnie LaVergna, Robbie Licht and Taylor Waller’s scores counted for the Big Macs.
Peters Township also defeated Upper St. Clair, 173-186, and clinched the section title. The boys are 9-0 in the section, and 15-0 overall.
Individual Semiqualifers
Several area golfers advanced to the championships after scoring in the top 18 at the WPIAL Class AAA Individual Semifinal Qualifier at Butler’s Golf Course.
Upper St. Clair’s Jack O’Leary earned the top spot with a 69 (par 72). Other qualifiers included Peters Township’s Jake Sollon, Alec Stopperich, Tanner Johnson, Hunter Bruce and Conner Schmidt; Upper St. Clair’s Lou Olsakovsky, Jackson Sandusky.
Mt. Lebanon’s Gabe Nass was named an alternate.
