Mt. Lebanon presents first Community Service Award
Lifelong Mt. Lebanon resident Robert F. Fischer is the recipient of the first Mt. Lebanon Community Service Award.
The award, to be presented annually, honors a dedicated volunteer who has improved the quality of life in Mt. Lebanon.
Susanne Wagner, Community Relations Board chairwoman, and Commissioner Steve Silverman, liaison to the board, presented Fischer with the award at Mt. Lebanon’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on April 4. The event honors the members of the municipality’s 20 advisory boards and authorities.
Fischer is best known for his work with Mt. Lebanon Volunteer Fire Co. He joined 13 years ago after graduating from Mt. Lebanon’s Citizens Fire Academy, which he administers today. He is a firefighter first class, apparatus operator and instructor for the state fire academy.
A former president of the volunteer fire company, Fischer has amassed 11,073 hours of department activities, including 170 overnight shifts and 5,395 responses to emergency fire calls. Each year, he represents Mt. Lebanon at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmetsburg, Md., where he selects escorts for the families of firefighters killed in the linen of duty and participates in the memorial ceremony.
Fischer has served on Mt. Lebanon’s zoning hearing and civil service boards and is an active member of the Dormont/Castle Shannon/Mt. Lebanon Rotary Club. He volunteers to help plan and carry out Mt. Lebanon’s Halloween Parade and Lebo Relay for Life, and is an active member of Peters Creek Baptist Church.
In presenting the award to Fischer, Wagner called him, “a man whose selfless efforts for many different organizations have made a visible and long-lasting impact on our community.”
