ML, USC libraries to offer Spring Walks and Talks

April 18-24
‘Birds in Your Backyard’
The Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon public libraries are collaborating on a series of spring walks and talks to encourage their communities to share in the beauty of spring. Both libraries will host each of the three presentations at their location and then share the walks, which will be led by nature guides at three different locations in Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon. All programs are free; registration is required for the walks.
“The presentations are planned to make us more attuned to the birds, flowers and plants that we may encounter on our springtime woodland hikes,” says Sharon Bruni, Mt. Lebanon Library’s associate director for public services.
The first talk is “Birds in Your Backyard” with speaker Knox Brown of Wild Birds Unlimited. Upper St. Clair Library will host the talk at 7 p.m. April 18; Mt. Lebanon Library will present it at 7 p.m. April 21. Brown will discuss the fundamentals of bird feeding and how to best enjoy the birds in your backyard. The accompanying walk, “Birds in Bird Park,” will be guided by Jim Phillips of the Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy from 9-11 a.m. April 24. Phillips will talk about how to identify birds by sight and sound. Use the Beadling Road entrance to Bird Park.
Upcoming programs include “Spring in the Woods” May 10 and 11 and a “Wildflower Walk” on May 14, and “Edible Wild Plants” June 14 and 16 followed by “Food under Food” June 19. Information on these programs will be published in future editions of The Almanac.
