Prehistoric pitch: Meadowcroft to host Vintage Base Ball Day

Aug. 13
Vintage Base Ball Day
On Aug. 13, visitors can experience America’s national pastime at the oldest site of human habitation in North America as part of the Vintage Base Ball Day event at Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, part of the Sen. John Heinz History Center museum system.
Visitors will enjoy a doubleheader of “base ball” (originally written as two words) between two teams, the Addison Mountain Stars and the Somerset Frosty Sons of Thunder, who will wear vintage-style uniforms and follow the rules commonly used during the 1860s.
Radio host Paul Guggenheimer of 90.5 WESA will emcee the game and discuss the 1860s rules with visitors.
In addition to vintage base ball, families can enjoy food such as hot dogs, popcorn and peanuts.
Meadowcroft will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Base ball games begin at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.
Throughout the day, visitors also can experience 16,000 years of history at Meadowcroft, a National Historic Landmark in Avella.
The Vintage Base Ball Day event is included with regular admission to Meadowcroft: $14 for adults, $13 for senior citizens and $6 for children ages 6-17. Children under 6 and history center members get in free.
