Hockey game to benefit slain Canonsburg police officer

Charity hockey game
Typically pitted against each other in competition, the Canon-McMillan and Peters Township ice hockey teams are coming together for a common cause.
On Dec. 21, the two high school hockey clubs will host an alumni charity game to benefit the Officer Scott Bashioum Children’s fund. The game will be held at the Iceoplex at Southpointe at 6:50 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and children 16 and under are admitted free.
A 50/50 drawing will be held along with raffles for an autographed Penguins jersey; a pair of tickets to the Penguins game Jan. 31 versus Nashville; and four tickets to the Penguins game Feb. 14 versus Vancouver.
The Canon-McMillan drumline will perform and plans are in the works for the Peters Township drum line to also participate.
The idea for the alumni game was the brainchild of club presidents Doug Hamilton from Peters and Jeff Rhoads from Canon-Mac. After Officer Bashioum was slain in an ambush on Nov. 10, leaving behind a wife, Ashley Taylor, and four children, Faren, Catherine, Cole and Carson, the two teams met during PIHL competition and raised $4,600 to benefit the cause.
“That is when we realized there was more we could do,” Hamilton wrote in an email. “That evening we started the groundwork for the alumni fundraiser.”
The Southpointe Hockey Club donated the ice time at the Iceoplex. C-M hockey secured the referees and EMT and within the course of three days, 40 hockey alumni players from across both clubs agreed to participate. Special jerseys have been designed for the event and “celebrity” coaches have been sought. Canonsburg mayor David H. Rhome will be in attendance as well.
“This is a community-wide coming together, to show support for a family who needs our support now more than ever,” Hamilton said. “Officer Scott Bashioum paid the ultimate price to protect the people of his community.”
