The Mt. Lebanon School Board unanimously selected Mary Birks as the new board president during its reorganization meeting Dec. 5.

The position was formerly held by Lawrence Lebowitz, who served two, one-year terms leading the board.

“He has left me big shoes to fill, literally and figuratively,” Birks said. “He is such a man of high integrity and is a tough act to follow. During his time as president, he taught me to think in a more deliberate way, along with being patient, thoughtful and trusting our administrators. He has continued to lay a foundation for the betterment of the entire community. No one can second guess his commitment to the district.”

Birks, a lifelong Mt. Lebanon resident, was first elected to the school board in 2009 and served as vice president for the last two years. She previously served as PTA council president.

“I understand the decisions our board makes effect every community member,” Birks said. “It’s a big responsibility and I take it very seriously. I’m a public education advocate. My goal is to make sure we are providing the best education for our students.”

The board also elected William Moorhead as vice president and appointed Thomas Peterson as solicitor.

“It’s a huge privilege and an awesome responsibility,” Birks said. “To build consensus and work with my colleagues in order to make sure we are doing the best for the is of the utmost importance.”
