If you use Painters Run Road through Scott Township and Upper St. Clair into Mt. Lebanon, start looking for a different route.

Starting at 7 a.m. Feb. 15, parts of the street will be closed as the Allegheny County Department of Public Works embarks on two phases of a project to construct two new retaining walls to help stabilize the roadway.

The first phase, anticipated to extend through May, will close Painters Run between McMillan and Robb Hollow roads. The posted detour will be to take Robb Hollow, which becomes Kelso Road, to the intersection with Bower Hill Road.

“We don’t want to detour traffic onto local roads,” Mike Dillon, the county’s deputy director of public works, explained. “State and county roads are better designed to handle heavy traffic.”

Painters Run is to be closed between Essen Hill and McMillan Road during the second phase.

“Traffic will be maintained to all local businesses and homes,” Dillon said about the period of road closures, which is expected to wrap up in late August. Access for emergency vehicles also will be maintained.

Plans call for construction of walls using soldier piles and lagging, a technique that incorporates steel beams and precast concrete blocks. Carman Paliotta Contracting of South Park is working on the $2.35 million project.
