Basketball round-up
Thanks to an 80-77 victory against Peters Township, Chartiers Valley clinched the Section 4-AAAA title in boys’ basketball. With two league games remaining, the Colts stood atop the league standings with an 11-1 slate. Meanwhile, the Indians slipped to 6-6 in the section and to fifth place in the division. Four teams advance to the WPIAL playoffs, scheduled to begin Feb. 9.
Though the Indians led, 27-26, after one frame and 60-58 after three quarters, CV used an 11-0 run to take control of the contest in the fourth frame, sealing the contest at the free throw line.
Eddie Flohr (22), Ross Wilkerson (21) and Joe Antonucci (17) led the Colts’ offensive attack.
Nick Valentic and Kelson Marisa fired in 26 and 22 tallies for the Indians, followed by Mike Cortese’s 11 markers and Ben Doyle’s 10 points.
While Baldwin dispatched Upper St. Clair, 52-49, to move into sole possession of second place, Mt. Lebanon eked out a 42-41 win at Canon-McMillan and Bethel Park defeated Moon, 79-53, to remain tied for third place, both with 7-5 slates.
Four players scored in double figures for Lebo: Mark Lamendola (11), Joey Passodelis (11), Eddie Jenkins (10) and Augie Garofoli (10). For the Big Macs, Jake Davey supplied 12 tallies and R.J. Bell finished with eight.
For BP, Josh Duda exploded for 26 points. Jake Dixon kicked in 19 markers.
In USC’s loss to the Highlanders, Andrew Wheeler and Zach Pateras each registered 17 points.
Meanwhile, the Lady Indians made their move in Section 4. Victories over Canon-McMillan (70-43) and Upper St. Clair (51-38) enabled them to clinch at least a share of the section title.
The Indians were 11-3 in the league and 18-3 overall while the Lady Macs dropped to 10-3 in the division and 13-6 overall heading into their showdown last night against Bethel Park (9-3, 14-4).
Against the Panthers, Cameron Morgan recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Madison Kerr followed with 11 tallies. Against the Lady Macs, Kerr led PT’s attack, pumping in 16 points. Alyssa Konopka and Makenna Marisa each followed with 14 tallies.
For the Lady Macs, who hosted second-place Bethel Park (Feb. 2), Cheyenne Trest led with nine markers.
The Lady Macs were coming off a stunning win, 62-55, against Mt. Lebanon, which previously had posted back-to-back wins against Peters Township and Bethel Park. In that triumph, Trest pumped in 24 points and Rebecca Turney added 16. Kate Sramac and McKenzie Bushee finished with 23 and 18 points respectively for Lebo, which was 8-4 and positioned fourth in the section to start the week’s action.
Meanwhile, Bethel Park was 9-3 in the division and 14-4 overall after beating Moon, 73-42. Shannon Conely (17) and Justina Mascaro (16) led the way for the Hawks.
The Lebo ladies improved to 9-4 in the section and 11-8 overall after beating West Allegheny, 51-44. Bushee and Sramac led the Blue Devils with 14 points each.
In other girls’ action, Chartiers Valley (8-4, 12-8) clinched third place in Section 5-AAA with a 60-53 triumph against Keystone Oaks (5-6, 9-12). Mackenzie Wagner fired in 19 points to lead the Colts. Maleyah Agurs finished with 15 tallies for the Golden Eagles, who are fourth in the division.
Heading into their showdown at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 at Seton-La Salle, Bishop Canevin (10-1, 17-2) and the Lady Rebels (9-1, 12-6) remained 1-2 in the Section 3-AA race. While the Crusaders dispatched Wilkinsburg, 61-9, SLS defeated Chartiers-Houston, 51-38. The Bucs previously upset Canevin. In the win for SLS, Shaunay Edmonds and Madalena Psillidis each had 15 points. Jala Walker led the Bucs (7-4, 14-6) with 25 markers.
