Parkway West Career and Tech School gives update

By Terry Kish For The Almanac Writer@thealmanac.Net 1 min read

Representatives from Parkway West Career and Technical School were at the Upper St. Clair Board of School Directors Feb. 22 regular meeting.

Parkway West executive director Dr. Darby Copeland and members of his administrative staff presented information about the school, including current programs and offerings planned for the future.

Dr. Copeland said there are 750 students currently attending Parkway, up from 548 students two years ago. Parkway currently offers 13 majors, including veterinary technology, culinary arts, automotive technology, phlebotomy technician and pharmacy technician. Next year, Parkway plans to add a program for sports medicine and rehabilitation therapy technician.

Parkway West students have opportunities to gain real-world experience by interacting with the public. For example, the vet tech program offers a doggie daycare and pet grooming, where students practice their skills by providing services like shampooing, ear cleaning and nail clipping.

Dr. Copeland told the board that while many of the students who enter Parkway West’s programs think that college is not for them, 80 percent of their students go on to post-secondary training.

During the Feb. 22 meeting, the board approved technology contracts for wireless equipment purchase, high school communications cabling, core network switch, uninterruptable power supply appliance and Allegheny Connect regional wide area network.
