Bethel Park grappler second at Powerade
Nino Bonaccorsi of Bethel Park claimed runner-up honors during the prestigious Powerade Wrestling Tournament held at Canon-McMillan High School. During the 170-pound championship match, Bonaccorsi dropped a narrow, 5-4 decision to Austin Bell from Belle Vernon.
Three other area grapplers medaled in the 49th annual event.
Brendon Furman from Canon-McMillan took third in the heavyweight division. He decisioned Joe Hensley from Moeller, Ohio, 4-3, in the consolation bout.
Logan Macri, also from Canon-Mac, secured sixth place in the 113-pound weight class. He dropped a 5-2 deccision to Alan Diltz from Benton in his consolation contest.
Peters Township’s Mike McAleavey edged Wesmont Hilltop’s Josiah Jones, 3-1, and finished fifth in the 220-pound weight category.
Six WPIAL wrestlers captured championships, including South Park’s Jake Wentzel. He won the 160-pound division with a 4-1 win against Trent Hidlay from Mifflin County. Wentzel was a runner-up in the tournament last year. He is a defending state champion.
