Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is extending its Winter Light Garden from 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays through Feb. 12.
On other days, Phipps continues to close at 5.
In the meantime, the annual Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show opens Friday, Jan. 16. The show, which runs through Feb. 28, will highlight the art of caring for and growing the two types of plants.
In Phipps’ Palm Court, guests will be introduced to the show with overhead hanging baskets of pink and purple orchids. The Sunken Garden will feature hybrid orchids in many hues, overflowing from baskets on top of a fountain and towering from hanging baskets over the pathway.
A small potting bench will display growing tools and techniques and feature signs that will answer questions for aspiring orchid growers.
In the Serpentine Room are permanent pieces in Phipps’ bonsai collection, while a starter plant will show guests the transformation these plants undergo.
Jordyn Melino, exhibit coordinator, designed the show with help from Georgia Wahl, display horticulturist at Phipps who specializes in orchid care, and Kevin Haughey, Phipps’ bonsai manager. Melino led the planning committee comprised of a member of every department at Phipps.
“Caring for orchids and training bonsai are truly forms of art that require a skilled hand,” Melino said. “For this year’s show, we are celebrating these works of art and showcasing their beauty and form.”
Also featured through Feb. 28 is the Garden Railroad, with displays of nine fairy tales and fables brought to life with interactive buttons, along miniature living plants, shrubs and trees.
