Mt. Lebanon deer issue is pitting neighbors against neighbors
Mt. Lebanon’s decision to employ sharpshooting is a sad one. First, there aren’t any deer left. Second, they must be aiming for total eradication!
What is different about Mt. Lebanon’s “deer management,” if you would call it that, is the manner in which it is taking place. They would like the general public to believe it is for the sake of reducing deer-auto collisions. However, what is really going on is residents are grouping together and letting the municipality know they don’t want any deer in their yards. And, of course, it’s a big secret which private properties have enlisted hunters. What this has done has pitted neighbors against neighbors, and business owners against customers.
For the people who are not residents of Mt. Lebanon, they should know that children walk to and from school here, and that we are densely populated. This is not a rural district. Having high-powered rifles in our neighborhoods at night is a huge safety risk – more of a risk than any deer pose.
I cannot help but think that a lot of people will be moving out of Mt. Lebanon because of this. The educational system here is great, but the penchant for violence and killing is not.
