Band festival/concert

South Fayette High School will host the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 1 West Band Festival Jan. 27-29. The festival showcases the talents of approximately 140 students from 43 local high schools and will be guest conducted by Mr. Dennis Glocke, director of concert bands at Penn State University.

The following students will be representing South Fayette High School: Amulya Annasamudram (grade 11), Colleen Welsh (grade 10), Grace Eckroate (grade 11), Katelyn Kelly (grade 10), Mitchell Downs (grade 12), Matthew Burroughs (grade 12), Matthew James (grade 10), Aaron James (grade 12), Eric Milburn (grade 12) and Alex Minford (grade 11). The festival will conclude with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29 in the South Fayette High School Theatre. Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased at the door. Open houses/tours

Jubilee Christian School, an inter-denominational school for grades K-8 with campuses in Mt. Lebanon and Dormont, will hold open houses at 10 a.m. Jan. 28 and Feb. 25. Parents and prospective students are invited to attend a brief informational session at the Mt. Lebanon campus, after which they may meet with the school’s principal and tour school facilities, including the new Dormont campus. Tours are also given at the Lower Campus in Mt. Lebanon at 10 a.m. Thursdays in January and February.

Jubilee will be accepting applications for the 2016-2017 school year. In addition, the school currently has openings in several grades for students who wish to transfer from public, private or home-school settings for the 2015-2016 school year. Kindergarten registration

Deadline for parents whose children will be age 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2016, to preregister their children for kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year is Jan. 29. Preregistration forms are available at www.bpsd.org. Parents of 5-year-olds who do not plan to enroll their child in Bethel Park kindergarten in the fall are asked to fill out the form and indicate that their child will not be attending in the fall.

Video contest underway

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania invites all Pennsylvania high school students to enter the Second Annual LWVPA High School Video Contest, with the theme of “Your Voice – Your Vote – Be Heard!” The contest is open to any team of students or individual student between 13 and 19 years of age and currently enrolled in high school in Pennsylvania. Contestants will create 30-second video public service announcements that encourage participation in the democratic process. Submission deadline is midnight, March 1. Official contest rules and submission forms can be found at www.palwv.org/videocontest.

Kindergarten parent meeting

An incoming Kindergarten Parent Meeting will take place 7 p.m. Feb. 17 in the all purpose room at South Fayette Elementary School, at which time your child’s registration packet will be given to you. Our principal, kindergarten teachers, school nurse, and the Extended Day Program staff will explain the process and answer questions. If you have a child that will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016, call 412-221-4542 ext. 315 to schedule their screening/registration appointment. Screening/registration dates are March 8-9.

Design opportunities

On Feb. 15, La Roche College will host Meet Design, an all-day event for high school juniors and seniors to explore creative careers in the fields of graphic and interior design. The event will be held 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the North Hills campus. Students will test their creative skills in a hands-on design project then hear first-hand accounts from alumni of La Roche College’s design programs who are now professionals in their respective fields. The event will include an optional, abbreviated tour of the college, a continental breakfast and lunch. Register at designatlaroche.com by Feb. 5. Space is limited; one parent or guardian per registered student may also attend. In the case of inclement weather, check for updates at laroche.edu.
