PIHL all-star game features local talent

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League’s All-Star Event will be held Jan. 31 at Brady’s Run Ice Arena. The Beaver County complex will host four games that day, starting with the Division 2 game at 1 p.m. Class A and AA games follow at 3 and 5. The evening concludes with the Class AAA game at 7.
The event will feature the top 42 players in each classification, putting 168 of the PIHL’s most-talented athletes on display in a community-oriented event.
With four representatives, Peters Township and Canon-McMillan lead the list of all-star selections from the area.
Thanks to Caden Shell, Zachery Gielarowski, Matt Amelio and Jake Shopes, the Indians led the Class AAA standings. Heading into this week’s action, Peters Township maintained a 10-1-4 record, well ahead of second-place North Allegheny (9-4-1).
Shopes leads PT in goals with 11 followed by Gielarowski with nine. Amelio has a team-high 17 assists and 19 points. In goal, Shell maintains a .928 save percentage and a 1.87 goals-against average.
For the 6-5-3 Big Macs, Conor Hartnett, Jay Oravetz, Jake McClelland and Luc Lavella are the leaders. While Hartnett owns a .903 save percentage, Lavella and McClelland lead in goals with 11 and 10, respectively. They have nine and seven assists. Though a defenseman, Oravetz has dished up nine assists to go along with one goal.
Three skaters each represent Bethel Park (6-7-1) and Upper St. Clair (4-9-2). For the Hawks are: William Tre Lowe (2.68 goals-against average); Tyler Kruszewski (7 goals, 11 assists) and Antonio Esposito (8 goals, 8 assists). For the Panthers are defensemen Josh Koch (2 goals, 5 assists) and Patrick Woomer (6 goals, 6 assists) along with forward Matt Finn (8 goals, 11 assists).
The Class AA game features Mt. Lebanon, Bishop Canevin and Chartiers Valley stars. Among them are: Ryan Wetherington and Giffin Nelson from Lebo; Thomas Krivak and Alec Bosnic for the Crusaders and Alex Evans representing the Colts.
Bosnic and Krivak lead the Crusaders, who are 11-5-1 overall, with 17 and 19 goals, respectively. They have 12 and nine assists each.
Nelson leads the Blue Devils with 13 goals while Wetherington owns a .891 save percentage in the nets.
Evans ranks second on the team for points with 10. He has scored five goals and collected five assists.
South Fayette tops the Class A list with three all-stars: Jake Stack, Jack Lipovich and Jordan Timmons. For the 11-3-1 Lions, Timmons has scored a team-high 18 goals and garnered 13 assists for 31 points. Though defensemen, Lipovich has 13 goals and 11 assists and Stack has seven tallies and five assists.
Jake Hickey and Tanner Orr represent South Park (9-8) in the Class A game, too. Both have scored 18 goals for the Eagles this winter. Hickey has 14 assists and Orr one more with 15.
Eugene Barilla represents Keystone Oaks in the Division II all-star game. The senior forward has scored nine goals and garnered 10 assists for the Golden Eagles, who were 2-13 heading into this week’s action.
