New businesses are opening. New homes are being built. And Bethel Park Mayor Jack Allen sees every reason to be optimistic about the community’s future.

Allen gave his assessment during his state of the municipality address during the June 13 council meeting.

“Bethel Park will always be a work in progress,” Allen said. “But Bethel Park continues to be blessed.”

Major commercial developments last year included Cool Springs Sports Center and Spoonwood Brewing Co. In 2016, Bethel Park will see a new Rite Aid store, a retail center at the Cool Springs property, Millennium Shops and D&J Maintenance.

Work on the South Hills YMCA is also ongoing next to Bethel Park High School, and several residential developments are also being built to include at least three senior living residences and numerous single-family homes.

Bethel Park Fire Company’s new station on Brightwood Road is another source of pride for Bethel Park, Allen said. The fire company will show off the building to the public at an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18.

The building “looks like it’s brand new, but it also looks like it has been in the community for a long time,” said Councilman Mark O’Brien. “It’s a glorious day for the fire department.”

In other business Monday, council:

• Hired Swede Construction Corp. of Elizabeth to repair the ramp leading to the municipal building and library. The project will cost $99,775, and work will take place this summer.

• Approved raises for 22 employees who fill management, supervisory and other administrative roles. The workers will receive raises of 2.2 percent.

• Rejected the bid received for the Beagle Drive bridge replacement project because it is too high. The municipality will likely rebid the project.
