Strip mall planned for Cool Springs site

The Cool Springs property on Baptist Road in Bethel Park has seen quite a bit of development in recent years, and it’s not over yet.

Municipal council approved plans for a new retail center at its meeting March 14. The property used to be a simple golf center, but the owner, Penn Cove Group, has been improving and expanding the site since purchasing it in 2013.

An indoor sports center opened in the fall and plans to build a neighborhood of carriage homes and an assisted living facility are in various stages of completion.

The 12,800-square-foot shopping center will feature a Steel Cactus Mexican restaurant as one of its tenants as well as three or four other shops. Construction is expected to begin in the spring and it should be finished by fall.

In another matter, council awarded the road program contract to El Grande Industries of Monessen for $1,526,275.55. El Grande was the lowest bidder for the project, which involves repaving and improving various roads in the municipality this summer.

The contract to repair the storm sewer on Cherry Street was awarded to Lawson Excavating of McKeesport for the low bid of $31,310.
