Old Schoolhouse Players to perform Biblical-based musical
Opening May 13
‘Children of Eden’
Stephen Schwartz’s musical “Children of Eden,” based on the Book of Genesis, opens May 13 for a two-weekend run at the Old Schoolhouse Players in Hickory. Performances are in the Bud Allison Auditorium in the Mount Pleasant Township Community Center.
Schwartz is no stranger to biblical-based musicals, having written the music for “Godspell” and “Pippin.” Among his other hit musicals are “Working” and “Wicked,” which views the “Wizard of Oz” story from the witch’s point of view.
Director Brian Nath said “Children of Eden,” while never having appeared on Broadway, is one of the more popular musicals for colleges, high schools and community theaters to perform.
“The Bible is just the vehicle for the story,” Nath said. “It’s actually more about parents and their relationships with their children.”
Erin Bock, who plays Eve, said the music is amazing.
“I really think the audience with love the music,” she said. “And regardless of your religion, the story is universal.”
Nath echoed Bock’s thoughts on Schwartz’s music and lyrics.
“The last two songs of the show will give you goose bumps,” Nath said.
Eric Davidson, who plays Adam, says the musical is about parenting. “But it’s more a story about humanity,” he said.
Tickets are $17 for adults, $14 for seniors and students, and $8 for children 12 and under.
