Teen dies in Bethel Park accident

A 16-year-old South Park Township resident died in a one-vehicle accident early Sunday on Stoltz Road in Bethel Park.

Shane Phillips was a rear-seat passenger in a vehicle that crashed on Stoltz Road shortly before 1 a.m., according to Bethel Park police.

A supervisor with the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said that he was taken to St. Clair Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:45.

An autopsy indicated that he died of blunt force trauma to the head, and the manner of death was accidental, according to the supervisor.

The victim was a sophomore at South Park High School, where he played middle linebacker and fullback on the varsity football team, according to hudle.com.

South Park School District provided this statement:

“Our condolences and thoughts are with the family and the entire South Park community. Grief counselors will be available for all South Park students beginning on Monday morning.”

Bethel Park Police Department’s traffic unit is investigating the accident.
