At Bethel Presbyterian Church, Bethel Park, The Rev. Catherine Eileen Smith will assume the duties of new pastor on June 5. The Rev. Smith was chosen as candidate for the position by the church’s pastor nominating committee. After a year’s study and search, she was formally elected by the congregation in a secret ballot on April 24. A special installation service for the new pastor will be held at a later date. The Rev. Smith has served as associate pastor for family ministries at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church since January 2011. Prior to that, she served as director for youth ministries at Fox Chapel and also had held the same position at Grace Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, S.C. A graduate of Purdue University with a degree in elementary education, she earned a Masters of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and is working on a doctorate in ministry through Western Theological Seminary. She and her husband, Joel, met at church when they were students at Purdue. Joel Smith is a director of Human Resources for PPG Industries. He has served the church as a youth group leader, Sunday school teacher and moderator of the deacons. The Smiths have three children: Ben, 19, a first-year student at Miami University; Jacob 17, a high school senior, who will attend Purdue University in the fall; and Emily, 13, a seventh-grader.

On Sundays, traditional liturgy featuring hymns and praise, Children’s Christian education and nursery care take place at 9:30 a.m.

• Introducing PEP Jr. (People Enjoying People for Kids) at 6 p.m. June 10. This kick-off event is designed for elementary-age children with special needs. Each child is to be accompanied by a caregiver. Children will enjoy dinner, crafts, games and meeting new friends. Cost is $5 per person.
• The seventh annual Bridges Golf Outing is June 18 at Ponderosa Golf Course in Hookstown. Registration is at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9. Proceeds from the Men’s Ministry benefit will go toward Family Promise and Christ Church mission projects. At In His Presence Church, Peters Township, a conference titled “The Passion, The Presence and The Power” will take place June 3 and 4 across the street at Peters Creek Presbyterian Church. The event will feature speaker and author Charles Carrin, whose ministry spans nearly 67 years. Evangelist Ethan Rupprecht will also speak. Rupprecht will share his powerful life story at the Saturday morning session. The conference will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. • Wings of Eagles motorcycle ministry will meet and depart from the church at 9:30 a.m. May 30 for a breakfast run.
• Grief Share, a bereavement support group led by the Rev. Pat Sutton, meets from 10 a.m. to noon or 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, through June 30. Find help for the grieving process through this Bible-based support group. The class consists of DVD teaching followed by discussion and sharing with others also on the grief journey.
