Open house

Concordia of the South Hills will hold an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 18, to highlight several floor plans at its location at 1300 Bower Hill Road, Mt. Lebanon. A seminar focusing on Tips for Seniors regarding Cyber-Security will also be offered. Tour the building and enjoy refreshments in the multi-purpose room. Private tour

Providence Point will host a private tour of eight current resident’s apartment homes for a limited number of attendees. Reservations are being accepted for 20 people to attend the tour, set for noon on Oct. 18. To reserve a spot in the tour, call 412-489-3550 or email bdull@ProvidencePoint.org.

Senior Health Fair

ManorCare Health Services – Green Tree, Greentree Road, will host a free Senior Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18. The event will feature more than 25 health care and wellness providers offering information, health and wellness screenings, and giveaways/door prizes. Educational series

Family Hospice and Palliative Care and Home Instead Senior Care will present the third and final programs in an educational series titled “Approaching the Unapproachable: Finding Peace in Preparedness.” The free presentations are held at Family Hospice in Mt. Lebanon. Attend one or both of the programs, which focus on important concerns at the end of life. Light refreshments will be served. The final two programs are”Funeral Trends: Past, Present and Future,” 4 to 5 p.m. Oct. 20, with speaker Pete McQuillin of the Funeral Consumers Alliance Speakers Bureau; and “Honoring Those Who Served: Veterans’ Care and Assistance,” 2 to 3 p.m. Nov. 4, presented by Scott Beinhauer of Beinhauer Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, and Ron Hestdalen, director of the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Trial study/education

Trial Study and Education for Seniors will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 12 at Christ United Methodist Church, Bethel Park. The study seeks at least 25 people who are 65 or older to participate in a one-hour seminar on the importance of influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations among older adults. The seminar will be presented by nursing practitioner doctoral student Jennifer Blomgren from the University of Pittsburgh, who is passionate about reaching people through faith communities. Basic demographic data will be collected. A pre- and post-test will be administered, along with a two-month followup contact. Register through the church office at 412-835-6621.

Theatrical-minded seniors

Better Than Ever Independents, also known as the Sassy Seniors, is a theatrical group that performs vaudeville-type shows at nursing homes, AARP meetings and more. New members ages 50 and older are needed. The group’s current show is “The Fabulous Fifties.” For more information, email jangary2@hotmail.com.

There will also be a Christmas show, with performances beginning in November.

Chair exercises

Chair Exercises for Seniors takes place from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesdays at Scott Township Library. Space is limited for the DVD-directed program. To register, call 412-429-5380.

TOPS Weight loss
