South Fayette Township will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a new park at 10 a.m. Sept. 20 at Seminary Avenue, near Oakdale.

The park, which will consist of three collegiate-size, multipurpose fields surround by parking and paved walking paths, will eliminate the problems of overcrowding at Fairview Park after the continued growth of the township.

“Frankly, when they are all in season, it’s a nightmare,” township manager Ryan Eggleston said in June. “Football remains strong and lacrosse only continues to grow. Our local soccer association accommodates over 650 boys and girls from ages 4 to 17. There are currently 14 travel teams and over 20 teams in the U-6, U-8, U-10 and U-12 age groups. There is a lot of activity.”

The need for a new facility is also a direct result of the Watson Institute moving into the former El Rancho Park on Hickory Grade Road, eliminating multiple soccer fields.

The name of the park is to be determined prior to its completion in Fall 2017.
